Get in TouchLeadership Grounded in Practice
Dr. LaVoulle has served in school and district leadership roles and has worked with culturally, academically, and linguistically diverse student and educator populations in the United States and internationally.
Her leadership experience includes school improvement, literacy leadership, instructional coaching, professional learning, curriculum and instruction, and organizational planning. Through The LaVoulle Group, she provides executive education and consulting designed to help education leaders strengthen their organizations and improve their effectiveness.
From Research to Educational Leadership
Dr. LaVoulle's work has continued to evolve from studying culture and pedagogy to helping education leaders address the systems that influence student achievement. Today, her leadership work focuses on questions such as:
- 1How well does a school understand its academic performance?
- 2Does the board have the information needed to provide meaningful academic oversight?
- 3Are school leaders translating student achievement data into instructional action?
- 4Are teachers receiving the professional learning and support they need?
- 5Are curriculum, instruction, assessment, and intervention aligned?
- 6What systems are in place to monitor whether improvement strategies are producing results?
These questions form the foundation of her work with education leaders.
Literacy, Popular Culture, and Learning
Dr. LaVoulle's scholarship examines the relationship between literacy, popular culture, identity, and education. She has spent years studying how educators might use culturally relevant texts and popular culture to engage students, stimulate critical thinking, and expand traditional approaches to teaching and learning.
Her research on hip-hop culture led to the development of the Read, Write, Rhyme™ Institute, a forum connecting educators, entertainers, entrepreneurs, researchers, and others interested in the relationship between hip-hop culture, youth, literacy, and education.
The Institute became a space for critical conversations about teaching, learning, culture, race, economics, education policy, and the experiences of young people.
Author and Researcher
Dr. LaVoulle is the author of Read, Write, Rhyme Institute: Educators, Entertainers, and Entrepreneurs Engaging in Hip-Hop Discourse.
The book examines how educators and members of the hip-hop community understand the relationship between popular culture and education. Through interviews and critical conversations, Dr. LaVoulle examines questions surrounding educational inequity, culturally responsive pedagogy, social justice, economic conditions, youth culture, and the role of public education.
Her work offers educators another lens for understanding hip-hop as a cultural and educational text.
